Why buy a Honda Accord when you can get a RWD turbo manual sedan?

I hate to steal the spotlight from Tavarish, but this just has to be said. Why would you buy a Honda Accord Touring when you can get an F10 BMW 535i WITH a manual transmission and rear wheel drive?

Kinja'd!!!

Both come in at about $33k. Sure, the Bimmer will have 20-30k on it, but look at what you get. A twin scroll turbocharged inline 6 engine, a 6 speed manual transmission, and pretty much every option available on the Honda.

Don't get me wrong. I love Honda. The new Honda accord is a great car, my dad has an '07 V6 SE that I've spent a decent amount of time driving. Not a bad daily driver at all. The thing is, it's not a BMW. Why would you spend $33,630 on a Honda Accord? Why not step up into something... Better? The folks over at Car Buying already told you why only chumps buy new cars, so take advantage of a great deal. Let someone else take that depreciation hit.

Kinja'd!!!

Enough slandering new cars, let's talk about this F10 535i. This car is Black saphire metallic over black Dakota leather. It's nicely optioned with the Premium package 2, which includes a 16 speaker sound system with a 9-channel amplifier. It has i-Drive, which after the 2009 update is very easy to use. My own car features the pre 2009 i-Drive, it's still easy to use after spending half an hour playing with it. This car is sitting on what I believe are E63 BMW M6 wheels, which if genuine fetch a nice amount of cash. The car is not an M-sport model, but the multi contour heated front seats should do a good enough job keeping you secure on a blast down the backroads.

Kinja'd!!!

My favorite thing about the car isn't the comfort access or the backup camera. It's the engine. The N55 is a lovely engine. It's more reliable than the notorious N54 used in the E9x 335i's before the 2010MY, and still retains most of the insane tunability. People are regularly tuning these to 400whp and 400wtq. With just a Tune and a downpipe, the N55 can roll with the E9x M3, with a helluva lot more torque! If you don't think that's impressive, you need to get off Oppositelock.

Who doesn't want a sedan that could sound like this?

The aftermarket support for the F10 is amazing. The car looks classy and tame right now, but you can transform it into whatever your heart desires. It may not be miata light, but you can take this autocrossing or to the track. Don't expect E30 like performance though, this is a 5 series after all. This is a low mileage, one owner car.

Still want that Honda Accord?

Peace of mind that there is a warranty. Perceived reliability of Honda over BMW. Maintenance and upkeep. It's new.

Also, there's one thing no one mentions when comparing used to new: ease of acquisition. When you buy new it's easy: show up to a dealer, pick the one you want, drive away with a new car.

Used? You can do a similar thing if you go certified pre owned, but good luck finding exactly what you want. You can hunt for a good deal of you shop around, but that takes time and effort. It's not as simple as driving up to a lot and getting what you want.

Finally, financing though I'm not sure on this one. I think I've heard it's easier to finance new than used. Feel free to correct me on that

you can buy a CPO 535i for mid $30's. I also wouldn't worry about an engine that's been used since the 2009MY. It was made to combat the issues that plagued the N54, and it did that well.

Sweet! Wish I found my car in stick. The only complaint I have is that the stock suspension is almost too soft. I swapped mine out for a DINAN set. Best decision ever.

I guess that's fair but I wouldn't buy either of them partly because I don't buy new cars and most because I can get an EP3 Type R for £2,000 or an E39 M5 for £5000. Gotta love the UK used car market.

ah you have a 550i right? Those are a little harder to find with 3 pedals.

I've heard that before, the DINAN set is great. I personally would've gone for coilovers simply because they hold value so well. Whenever I sell he car could sell the coilovers for over half the initial price.

I can't see anyone with $30k to spend buying a 6spd F10 5series when you can get a e90/e92 m3 for the same price. Newer 5 series are land yatchs made for comfort and the occasional highway hoon. Have a 6speed in one of these seems like it would annoy the piss out of me; however, If it were a M5 I'd eat everything I just said.

It's waaaay easier to finance new. Although I much prefer to finance through a personal bank. If you go through a bank they: give you an amount you can spend (you can buy from a person or a dealership), and give you a criteria the car has to meet (certain age limits, mileage, and has to generally be over $10k). Though my bank will allow you to finance anything no matter age or cost that has a NADA book value. They'll finance a 1991 Nsx or a 1980 3 series.

Anything from carmax is pretty much CPO. All their cars have gone through reconditioning. Slap an extended warranty on with a low deductible and enjoy your worry free M3.

And even if it's CPO something is going to go wrong at some point.

You can get it sent to a store close to you without making any commitment to buy. I don't see anywhere that says cpo. The extended warranty for my 02 m3 was around $4k. If you're financing the vehicle through your bank they can just add that on the loan without having to get permission (if they offer a warranty). CPO is a great thing, but it really isn't worth waiting for one to pop up imo.

But I'm anti-turbo. My goal is to never again buy a car that doesn't have all of these traits:

RWD

N/A

Gated shifter

This is going to severely limit my choice in cars. Hopefully I never have a big family because the E90 will need to be big enough to haul them around since I'm not allowed to buy anything without a gated shifter, and I don't know of a bigger car with a gated shifter!

Honestly it's just my logic with cars. When I buy cars I get the fastest, most over-engineered model made. If I bought a 525 or 550 every time I even looked at it I would think: "I should have got a M5."

well the early (95MY) obd1 S50 engined M3's weren't necessarily more reliable, but they were easier to diagnose and in turn repair.

The later (96-99MY) obd2 S52's had more hp and tq. They dont respond as well to mods. For example; a tune, exhaust, and an intake would yield better results on a dyno if the E36 was a 95.

Reason for suggesting a highly optioned base Carrera: I'm guessing it will be way cheaper than a C2S. Gearheads all want the C2S. If she doesn't need it to be crazy fast then a base Carrera that has PASM and rear parking sensors will be a lot nicer than my car (I have neither and wish I did as PASM rules and rear parking sensors would have prevented my mishap earlier in the year!)

right outside of DC I'm seeing around 3 that are manual for mid 30's. If I went auto I'd find even more.

I mean, compared to a Honda. You'll never have to replace the clutch in the Honda since it's a slushbox, never have to get the turbos replaced, etc. The parts for the Honda are less expensive, not to mention tires will be cheaper since the wheels are smaller and the speed rating is lower.

Yes, a used 535 would be awesome for someone who wants a BMW but can only afford an Accord, but for everyone else it makes no sense, and that makes me happy because it means there's one more 535i left in a dealer lot for me to snag.

All good points.

Personally, I'd never spend $34k on an accord. If I wanted to save money, I'd buy a CPO accord for $17k and drive it into the ground.

Because it's a much, much, much better car? Unknown driving history....so what. Its in great shape, they aren't made of wax. No problem. Also...the German car service myth is beyond silly. If you're not blowing all your extra money on drugs and hookers, you can afford to keep a used mid-level 6 cylinder 5 series serviced just fine.

30 might get you a beat-to-shit M3, not one you'd necessarily want to buy though.

Awesome post, these are amazing cars. There are starting to be some serious tuning options for the N55, we will see 600 whp soon.

Typical moronic comments about how everyone should only ever buy brand new Japanese economy cars. Why are you even on this site if you're going to make that remark.

THANK YOU! I'm not forcing anyone to buy this. Have a little fun people!

The N55 is a sweet engine. I'd love to own one eventually, an LCI E90 M-sport 335i would be nice. I'll make a post with one of those soon haha!

Ha ha that came out wrong. The E90 doesn't have a gated shifter. I just bought it before I came up with this rule, so the car gets an exemption.

Ahhhhhhhh. Well, I found a gated shift kit for E36. I bet you could bring the sedan up to par.

But now you're really going to be disappointed. The E90 has the DCT :P
